BSNL will be investing Rs7000 crore in providing free WiFi services in 2500 cities and towns across India. This is being done as a part of the Digital India project. The free WiFi service will be started soon and be carried over to 2016 when it will be completed. Some of the cities and towns where BSNL will provide free WiFi services are Chennai, Kolkata, Lucknow, Dehradun, Hyderabad, Varanasi, Bhopal, Jaipur, Patna, Indore, Chandigarh and Ludhiana.
The free WiFi service will be provided for a limited time period after which users would be charged.

Three types of WiFi hotspots provided by BSNL are:

Small Hotspot which would be available in cafe, lounge and food courts and these would provide a speed of 2Mbps
Mid Hotspot would be provided in malls, IT parks, resorts and hospitals with a speed of 4Mbps
Large Hotspot which would be provided in campus, large malls and in uncovered semi and rural areas with a broadband speed of 10Mbps
